Abstraction ...

As usual they fail to mention the continued growing of unsuitable crops next to spate rivers. Even rivers such as the Teme which has little water abstracted for consumer use suffers every year from agricultural water usage. Growing potatoes in the Teme valley is a waste of resources. The pumps have been on all down the river the last two weeks meaning that even when it rains the river has remained generally on the floor.
I don't blame the farmers themselves for this, the market prices than can achieve for traditional crops from orchards etc. are so low that potatoes become the only way of making a living. However it is a massive waste of both land and water all to keep prices at rock bottom for the supermarkets to profit and the consumer to get their fruit cheap.
If supermarkets took slightly smaller profits and the consumer was willing to pay a decent price, then the Teme valley could once again be full of orchards instead of fields of potatoes. Far less water would be required from the river and the flooding at times of spate would be massively reduced.

you can actually see the water drop on the colne during the morning...:eek:

It wouldn't be so bad if the supermarkets did deliver cheap food but in many cases they don't.
I went to a local Sunday market this morning and bought all my fruit and veg for the week at a fraction of the supermarket prices. The idea that it's cheap to shop at supermarkets is a myth spread by the supermarkets themselves.

"Every little helps..."

Except that it will take a heck of a lot of water to put that fire out!
