A trip to the wye

I'm going on a trip to Crickhowell so was hoping to fish the wye for Barbel I have no knowledge of the area or beats fishing licences etc so any information would be greatly received I live down south and fish the Royalty on a regular basis . Many thanks Clive.

Hi Clive. I make the 220 mile trip every September to fish the Wye between Ross and Hereford. I have done this for the last 15 years with my fishing mates, but to be honest our excitement to fish this iconic river has been somewhat dulled due to low water levels and pollution concerns. We still intend to go and have pre-booked beats through the Wye and Usk Foundation. We now understand descriptions used and what they mean ie "wild fishing" means "you can't get near the river without a machete"! We have had some wonderful sessions on the Wye, mainly using pellet and feeders, but trotting can be productive. I hope you do well and not put off by the adverse publicity surrounding the problems on the river! Tight lines

Many thanks Paul ,I don't suppose you know who I should contact to fish the area I'm staying ?

Hi Clive,

There's quite a bit of fishing on the lower river not that far from where you are staying, Wye and Usk beats to book online, you've got Newport anglers water at Symonds Yat, some stretches around Monmouth, ( not sure who controls these), and Bishopswood, which is just downstream from Kerne Bridge, day tickets from Colt stores petrol station.
These are just a few I'm aware of.

Not sure how far you are from Aramstone beat, but you could contact Stan Turner who controls the beat. His number used to be 07899 903744. The Wye and Usk Foundation is probably your best bet. 01874 711714

Hi Ben, so DTs are for sale at the Petrol Station again? Good stuff.

Hi men

And me Neil , doing over nighters in the carpark with Sue in hotel Vectra , cooking brekkie in the dark , then off to beat the canoes for a few hours 😉. Hope one day Sue will get back into it so we can have a dabble 👍
