Hello BFW community,
I'm happy to join you here. I've been passionate about fishing since childhood (1991) and I live in France, in the Champagne region in Epernay (you know our beverage well). Please excuse me in advance for my sometimes imperfect English, I admit.

The river that flows through my town is called La Marne, I am also near the Aisne and Meuse rivers. I am an hour's drive from Lac du Der, Lac de la Forêt d'Orient, and Gigantica, the gravel pit owned by Danny Fairbrass for those who know. I sometimes go fishing in the gravel pit, which is right next door.

I've already trip to England to fully immerse myself in my passion and experience firsthand the fishing grounds frequented by my idols like Peter Drennan, Des Taylor, Dave Harrell, Martin Bowler, Terry Lampard, Terry Hearn, and so many others...I had also been to the old Fosters of Birmingham store before it became AD, it was paradise, a real toy store for me!🎅

I have great respect for the fervor that the English have towards our passion, from match to feeder fishing, from hair rigs to boilie making, I have dreamed and learned so much by reading and watching these heroes of the bank.

I'm here to learn and share my opinions on our common passion with my fellow anglers in England. Thank you for your welcome and for all the advice you will give me, I have so much to learn.🤠

Below are a couple of photos of the places where I fish.

Welcome Ludo, I’m sure you will find a wealth of information and knowledge not only for barbel fishing but also other species too shared by the BFW members as most on here are very knowledgeable indeed. 🎣

Those smaller rivers look 👀 nice places to fish 🎣 a few of us are thinking of coming over to France 🇫🇷 to sample the barbel fishing in the future sometime, could you recommend some smaller rivers with good access and reasonable numbers of fish ? Please, regards Jim.

Thank you all for your warm welcome. :)

I know some smaller rivers where I have also fished, and I would recommend these :

La Somme & l'Oise : You will find these in towns such as Amiens, Noyon and Compiègne. These rivers produce some of the largest barbel in the country and are small and relatively accessible. I highly recommend watching the videos by Cyrille Vasseur, an angler for Garbolino and Dynamite Baits, who presents everything there is to know about barbel fishing in these areas. (https://www.youtube.com/@lepecheurpicard80)

La Vesle : This small natural river flows through my region and has easily accessible spots. During the summer, some areas suffer from a lack of water due to drought, but many spots are viable all year round and produce barbel, chub, perch, carp and pike, which are underestimated by anglers themselves. Here at Beaumont-sur-Vesle (https://maps.app.goo.gl/DgWdYifwqLMixqe2A), or Fismes (https://maps.app.goo.gl/AiBsoz6VDKordCge7)

Le Canal Saint Martin : This small natural canal is located in the town of Châlons en Champagne, a 30-minute drive from my home. I have a special attachment to this place because it was here that I finished 8th in the French Championships in 2001 when I was a competitive angler. It is very easy to access and there is a well-known fishing shop in this town right next to the fishing spot (Europêche Bouxin - https://www.facebook.com/europechebouxin.chalonsenchampagne). Roach, chub, barbel, bream, perch, carp, zander, pike on the menu. (https://maps.app.goo.gl/5kUG29G5ZQM7cGw87)

La Meuse and its small tributary La Semois : The locations are magnificent and wild, with record-breaking barbel and carp caught here by anglers from all over Europe (many English and Dutch anglers). Trout can also be fished in the Semois, and I recommend the Monthermé area (https://maps.app.goo.gl/PgqkXTXzj77nnui36) Bogny sur Meuse (https://maps.app.goo.gl/e6ZW9GnDrExwQjABA) and Haulmé (https://maps.app.goo.gl/nh73L9nFGrUnYjtS8)

La Vienne : River located in the Limoges area at Aixe-sur-Vienne (https://maps.app.goo.gl/KtxcesiHVsAvpgcP9), known for its large population of barbel, the former angler and captain of the French coarse fishing team Paul-Louis Lafont has produced several reports and videos there that have been the talk of the fishing world.

La Dordogne : The Lot region in the south-west and the river of my childhood, the region is absolutely magnificent, Vayrac (https://maps.app.goo.gl/DzTWu17mx7sRtX3R6), problem is that in summer it's overrun with canoes, so you have to get away from easily accessible places to be able to fish in peace.

In addition, if you are interested, I can invite you for a free day of fishing in a 4 hectares (2.5 acres) gravel pit 15 minutes' drive from my home. It owned by a friend and I fish there regularly. Carp, tench, bream, roach and predatory fish are all present and an excellent opportunity to share a barbecue, a beer and talk about fishing with fellow enthusiasts. 🤠
