I'm after a new Avon rod for going down the river. Mainly be used for the odd chubbing session and me attempting to learn how to roll meat.

It seems that avon rods are not as popular as they used to be but I think I've narrowed it down to either a 11 foot 1.5 torrix or the Davis tackle 1.6 Harrison (did consider the Hardy marksman to but at that price I can get a Harrison built). Has anyone used either. What's the action like on the Davis tackle rod? I'm guessing that if I'm using it for rolling as well I'd want it to be quite a tippy rod (which was what made me think of the Torrix) but I'm not sure. Don't want anything above a 1.5 tc.

Ben, don't rule out the 11 ft Harrison Gti 1.75 as it is a very forgiving rod. I suspect the TC will put you off, but if you get a chance to hold one, you'll see what I mean.
 
Hardy Marksmen Specimen (barbel biased) or Specialist (chub biased) avon

(pre supero if you can find one)

Just read your post fully, i know they are expensive but they are the ********!
 
Another shout for the Hardy Marksman rods - lightweight and a great action. Still much prefer my Specimen Avon rod over the Torrix.

I used to use a North Western 11ft 1.5lb which was just the job.

This rod is gathering dust in my shed so if you fancy spending 25-30% of what you intend to spend on a Harrison.....then let me know if you want a waggle.

BTW it's the two piece (which is harder to find that the three piece medium feeder of which I have two of)

I use a 1.25lb Harrison which comes with an Avon top and a quiver in 12foot which covers most bases for chub fishing and light barbel although I have had a near 15lber on the quiver whilst chub fishing

How about a Drennan Series 7 Avon/ Quiver in either 1.25 lb or 1.5 lb. Also have the choice of 11 or 12ft and comes with a quiver carrier section with tips.
Wouldn't be without my 1.5's.

I actually use 2 of the davies tackle avons you mention for my tench fishing

Superb rods !


Lovely full through action , soft in the tip with the power gently coming in as you lean in , you really can give them the butt without any real fear of hook pulls as they are so forgiving

The looks and build quality are excellent too


I would recommend them without hesitation
 
Thank you chaps I'm going to have to take the family down to Bournemouth for the day and set the sat nav to go via Christchurch where we might somehow end up in Davis tackle. They seem to have a good selection will see what takes me fancy.
 
Obviously I'm biased but the Davis Tackle Avon rods really do have a true Avon action and are a joy to use.

Regarding the Hardy Marksman rods, the originals were indeed great rods, the replacement "Supero" range less so. Anyone looking to buy a Hardy Marksman should expect to get it for a hefty discount as the range has been discontinued.
 
Another vote for the Hardy Marksman rods. I have a specialist and a Specimen version. Both great rods with fantastic through actions handling fish from 3-12lb for me. They come up on ebay and at great value (occasionally).
