the 1st thing is, has anyone noticed from what direction barbel takes their bait, by this i am trying to find out if others have watched and their findings,
ie; do they take the bait mainly from an upstream direction or downstream or take it angling across the current? i am genuinely desperate to obtain this info and the more fed back the better, also has anyone any findings on the weight of barbel caught in conjunction with the salinity or how far down a river seawards again very interested in this info....j.w

when i asked about up/downstream i am after info re. if there is any large difference in one particular direction....j.w

Hi John

After observing many barbel feeding, it can vary. Generally I would say they approach feed from upstream. But on watching a dvd recently they also approach across the current and have been known to surface feed.
In the main though I would say they lie facing upstream and move forward to pick up feed.

Regarding Salinity as I tend not to fish Tidal waters I wouldn't have a clue.

thanks clive but i have already seen it.
No Declan but it does seem that barbel from lower reaches seem as though they are bigger specimens, or is it my mind playing tricks
