Nice try, Simon - and thanks to Tom for seconding. It's a case of low expectations easily met.
I heard about the missing money and the former chairman's subsequent demise. Find it hard to believe. Though I didn't know the man (who shall remain nameless) personally, he was always very cordial...
Getting ever more expensive, as they're no longer made.
Paid £400 for a secondhand Ray Walton Avon No 2, 10 years ago!
Still use it all the time - a wonderful rod, whether on the Dove or the margins of the Upper Trent.
Sorry, no info on the Wye, specifically. You'll find level readings on the EA site - presumably you know the url?
Good luck and hope you catch.
I'm on the Upper Trent tomorrow, and overnight. Safe to say; you're in with a better chance!
I invariably use braid mainline, a soft rod and a centrepin. Besides bite indication (as already mentioned) playing a fish without line stretch is also a different experience. You can 'feel' much more, in terms of fish movement, thus when to give line, etc. It works for me!
Fred Crouch did it fairly successfully for a good few years (I still have a jet and a narrow drum trotter). It's more likely, however, that if any enterprising soul invested in the tools to produce such a reel it would be in the Garry Mills price bracket anyway.
Sorry to buck the trend, however I've had my Korums for a decade or more, and they're fab. Lost the battery cover a few years ago, so just cover in gorilla tape. Battery lasts eons!
It may be that the manufacturing process has changed and they're now not as good as they once were.
