    making rigs

I used to tie them up in advance, and carry a rig box. One problem I found was I was forever changing my mind about the best to use on any particular day..length, hook size, hair length, braid or Fluoro etc that I never had what I wanted made up so I was forever making new ones up anyw Now I...

    Barbel on the float

There is a Dave Harrell video on U Tube using a speci waggler on the Severn, talks a bit about shotting on there as well, worth a watch

    Barbel on the float

Steven, I recently started to use a waggler on the river Severn for Barbel & Chub so am by no means an expert, but I did catch few. I used a loaded 5AAA or 6AAA straight bodied waggler, so all the weight was at the float, then 2 or 3 No4 shot about half depth, then some No8's strung out towards...

Middle Severn, in decline or not???

Is it a case of pellets being blown or are people over feeding them? I have had better results on casters and maggots this year using a feed heavy with hemp, only a few pellets and casters or a maggot feeder.

Middle Severn, in decline or not???

This season was the first were I have fished the Middle Severn with any regularity, fishing from Atcham down to Arley, and I have to admit that I am very pleased with my results. Some cracking fish and cracking days. So I get confused when I hear, from respected anglers, that the Middle...

    Peregrine rods

I can't comment on the GTi but I have 3 peregrine rods all bought in the last couple of years, 2 x 12' GTx 1.75 T/C & 1 x 12' GTx 1.5 T/C, and think that they are fantastic rods. The tips are sensitive enough and they have plenty of power in reserve and as a bonus look good as well. Right now I...

Maggot feeder - What hooklinks and hooks?

I was using a 3ft hooklength and the breaks were at the loop end. I generally use a palmar knot or knotless knot to tie on the hook and a figure of 8 loop at the other end to attach to a quick change swivel, it was breaking at or near this knot, that's where I'd expect it to break. I take the...

Maggot feeder - What hooklinks and hooks?

The lighter rod is something I had not considered but a good point. I was using a 1.5lb rod with an Avon tip, but maybe thats still too heavy, the breaks were not on the strike but within the first 15 seconds after connecting with the fish.

Maggot feeder - What hooklinks and hooks?

I had a challenging day on the Middle Severn yesterday and went through many different hooks and hooklinks on the maggot feeder rig. This got me thinking what do other people use when they are fishing maggots on the feeder. I was broken on my first 3 casts : 1...size 14 drennan super spade...

    Hemp and Caster

I saw an article in one of the mags that showed someone float fishing at Hampton Loade on the Severn for barbel, he was using a mix of 50% hemp, 25% Caster and 25% small pellets for his feed. I have used this same mix several times in the feeder and the dropper this season and have caught...

    North West Anglers

Bay Malton's stretch of the Dane is very good for both Barbel and Chub, however it does get hammered all through the summer months, by about October is starts to quieter down. Middlewich Joint anglers have a lot of the Dane downstream of the Bay Malton stretch. The best bit is the members only...

Mark Tunley specimen Float rod new for sale

John, What blank is it made from? I have seen that he makes some 1.25lb float rods on a Torrix blank and also from Free Spirit Blanks. What type of handle is it? Thanks Michael

    Perfect reel for Torrix 12ft 1.75 ????

I use shimano DL 4000 FA Baitrunner reels for all my barbel fishing, I have 3 of them and they are fantastic reels. These are paired with Peregrine GTX 1.75 & 1.5 t/c rods and feel well balanced and have plenty of power for all of my fishing. Would absolutely recommend Shimano reels....pure...

    Falling water temperatures

I eventually decided to give it a go today and ended up at Knowle Sands, wow what a windy day. Whatever the water temperatures I managed 5 barbs to 6lb all on boilies, nothing on pellets. I have been trying different baits much more this season rather than sticking to a pellet only approach and...

    Falling water temperatures

I am thinking of fishing on the Severn next week, but the weather forecast tonight has made me have second thoughts. With the oncoming colder weather I got to wondering what effect this will have on water temperatures? Clearly the water temperatures are going to drop.......but how quickly...

    Pulled out

I have heard of other people using a combi rig to reduce the cost of the hooklink with fluoro being much cheaper than braid. For those using a combi rig what length of braid are you using at the hook end? What is the favoured brand of fluoro? Michael
