    What compost

My garden compost heap grows plenty of them, they seem to concentrate on the stalks of greens that are rotting down and old tea bags. I throw every bit of vegetable waste peelings plus the ash from my log burner on my heap and the worms thrive.

Normark Bob James 12ft river specialist travel rod

Bob put his name to quite a few 'experimental' rods in the past but usually they were green blanks. I still have one he gave me years ago, a 12' Avon style but it had 2 x 5' sections and a detachable butt, no names or branding on it as it was a prototype. I wouldn't be put off by it's apparent...

    Lack of focus in fishing.

I started off my fishing life on the Thames and Mole back in the 60's, nearly always float fishing and caught many barbel, along with roach, chub, etc. When I moved north my local river became the Dane, again mostly float fishing, it wasn't until I moved on to the Severn and Ribble that I got...

    Tench 2016 - 2018 and counting ......

The tench are getting going better now as the weather warms up, I had my first of the year back in February but only been picking up odd fish since, yesterday though i had three including a new PB of 7.12.

    Closed Season Controversy

Phil, I am well aware that a lot of rivers are fly only, also that some clubs enforce that rule even if byelaws allow worming. The river I was thinking of is the Severn where a ledgered worm is legal under the byelaws and also under some clubs' rules.

    Closed Season Controversy

I thought commercials were stillwaters which are open all year, artifically (over)stocked and places that I personally have no interest in fishing. Nothing stops you fishing the rivers between March and June now, you don't even need a fly rod as many byelaws and club rules allow "worming for...

New License due soon please check dates, the 31st march might not apply

I've been doing mine by direct debit for years, current one expires at the end of March, they took this year's payment on March 5th but new one not arrived yet though I know a few others who do the same as me have received theirs.

Looking to change my car ..... Any advice on what to buy ?

I'd say go for a Yeti, the 40/20/40 split on the rear seats makes it dead easy to get rods in even though it's shorter than my previous Astra estate. Very economical and a joy to drive.

    Otter petition.

Absolutely, the cycle on the Severn seems to have moved away from barbel or nothing to a more "natural" balance with more silver fish and some very good perch. BTW about 8 years back I used to watch otters feeding on small silvers, then I would catch barbel from the swim within minutes of the...

    Otter petition.

Otters are NOT the problem, the reason so many rivers are in decline is down to the adverse effect that we (human beings) have had and continue to have on the environment. Removal of upland woodland, draining of marshes, concreting over flood plains, the list is endless, the species that needs...

    Float Rod For Barbel

I've got the 13' Prodigy TXL float and find it well suited to trotting the Severn coupled with 8lb main and 6lb hook link. I prefer a through action rod and this has plenty of power all the way through.

    Fox Specialist Brolly

I've got a Cotswold Aquarius quiver and my Fox Specialist fits, it's a little tight but still room for landing net pole, bank sticks, etc.

Long trotting big baits for chub

The late Keith Speer always used to fish with braid main line, I'm sure there must be some of his informative articles in the archives but I can't find them!

    Grayling for the pot

I don't see anything wrong with doing it, most clubs rules forbid it however, but I've been considering taking the odd one myself on waters where the rules allow it.

    Night Floats

Reminds me of how we used to float fish at night when I was a kid, a good old fashioned bicycle headlamp that you could set low on the bank and aimed on the float.

    Perch

Been using Mustad Demon circle hooks in size 4 for fishing both lobworms and livebaits on my last two outings and not lost a fish, all hooked neatly in the scissors. This one yesterday took a lip hooked 4" dace.
