There's only one thing to do when barbel are spawning in my opinion, take the Polaroids and get to as many spawning beds along the river as possible to count the fish.
I don't think any serious angler would cast a bait at spawning fish but there will always be some lunatic that will!
How...
On busy rivers that see heavy angling pressure I can understand the argument for giving the rivers and banks a break. At the same time though the fish on these venues must rely more on anglers bait, so is it a good idea to take a major food source away at a time when they're using more energy...
The middle reaches of my local wharfe around Boston spa used to be prolific for barbel. Whilst they are still present it seems to be more of a game river now. Grayling are thriving and as far as I'm aware there hasn't been a roach caught for years!
The lower tidal reaches however are a...
Walked the dog down the bank tonight, huge tree fallen straight through a peg I often fish. Had I or anyone else been sat there it would of been game over.
We spend enough time thinking about where to place a bait in a swim or where you might land a fish. Recent events have got me looking at a peg and thinking how and where would I get out of the water. A two foot drop to the water could be impossible to get out of with heavy wet clothes on. Know...
Just had mine on all weekend walking in Wales as my walking boots had split! They were spot on, even over good distance and handy when I went upto my knee in a bog!
The wooden bridge over my local beck nearly kills me every time though!
I occupy myself by fishing, watching the water, feeding small amounts of bait in and trying to picture what's happening beneath the surface. Questioning myself if there's barbel in the swim, if not where are they! I do get distracted watching the wildlife that comes along but a quick flick of...
The idea of someone pulling for a break on a big fish is disgusting, I'd have to be saying something if I knew it was going on. It may take longer to land but as long as your not playing the poor thing to death then your better getting it out. They don't call em bonus fish for nothing, 6lb of...
Many thanks for the replys, confirmed my thoughts. Been out this evening and had 2 barbel and 2 chub, all swam back well after a short rest, the longest taking 5mins before kicking hard to let me know she was ready to go.
What do people think about this? With a comment on another thread saying people shouldn't fish for barbel and more worryingly I read on another forum of someone having to rest a barbel for 90min before it swam away!
The fish I've caught over the last few weeks have all gone back very strongly...
The greys rods are good, I have a 15ft and it has a serious amount of power whilst still being soft enough for smaller fish. I was using it for grayling in winter.
I'm feeling quite posertive about my local river. It seems to be looking healthy with plenty of weed growth. Hopefully last years floods cleaned a lot of silt away. There's also lots of fly hatches wich has to be good news.
I've seen otters regularly for the last 3 years yet there are still...
There were plenty around six weeks ago Anthony, I was seeing them almost every time I walked the banks. I think maybe the females are off having cubs somewere but no sign of the males. I hope this lasts of course but something tells me we'll soon be hearing the high pitched squeak of little paws!
