My favourite winter river method is a trotted live or dead bait, usually an afternoon session going into dusk. As for avoiding smaller pike.... that's a question that's pained me for years, but keep going and eventually the odd bigger one turns up.
Have you tried looking for specialist or avon rods, these are twin tipped usually with a 1.25lb or 1.5lb top section and another top with 2 or 3 interchangeable quiver tips.
Alternatively a look on some facebook selling pages or ebay will turn up some second hand bargains.
Years ago I used to use 'secret agent', cant remember who made it but it caught me plenty.
The only downside was any spillage or if you got it on your skin it was impossible to scrub off, I bet my old unhooking mat is sat at the bottom of a council tip somewhere still stinking.
Probably the remaining 98% don't fish rivers and felt they didn't care as they get to fish all year anyway, strange really how land locked fish don't get any protection during spawning and no one cares.
Call me an old cynic but the closed season was never intended to look after the fish, it was...
I fish a lot from a boat pike fishing over the winter, I've had 5000 head jackets and eventually the wet comes through. I've been wearing Preston DF25 bib and brace with jacket and cannot fault them, its hard wearing breathable and most of all dry. Unfortunately it only come in black with blue...
I'm fishing below a weir section on the Don at the moment which is rocky and snaggy, I've had to ditch the braid hooklinks due to them pinging like cotton on sharp rocks, 10 / 12lb nylon has restored the hook / land rate due to its better abrasive resistance.
I have a copy of an old booklet that the EA produced maybe 15 years ago detailing the Trent's fishing just the same as Bob's. As the EA rent out the stretches I would think that they could quite easily fill in Bob's information gaps, I presume they no longer produce the booklet due to cost...
I've found that since Facebook stopped me and everyone else I presume seeing all my contacts posts, a few of the more shall I say 'delicate' ones seem to take it personal that I don't comment any more. This itself causes problems as people think they are being ignored.
To be honest these days I...
I've had a pair of breathables repaired twice by Diver Dave and not been satisfied either time. The repair costs combined with 2 postage costs are a bit steep as well.
Before last winter I bought a Vass winter weight jacket and bib and brace trousers, these have worn well over the winter pike...
I'll second the Fox Duralite, certainly not cheap but extremely well made and solid. I've had cheaper and found they are not as good, the arms are solid and will easily take your weight getting in and out without bending and creaking (the chair not me) and the seat construction is excellent with...
Interestingly for around £10 you can also get an attachment for your phone to watch in real time remotely.
That would be good for the shed or garage if scrotes decided to pay a visit while you were away from home, you can then alert the police as the crime is underway.
Mind you I suppose their...
A relative of mine works for the very British company Morphy Richards, they now produce very little in the Uk but import from China and re-package at was once their factory.
Following on from my last post, have you considered having the reel powder coated. The powder coaters will take it back to bare metal, prime / seal and finish it in just about any colour you would require.
The finish would be better and more durable than paint and I'm sure the cost wouldn't be...
I would be tempted to restore it mechanically and leave the paint alone if it was mine, but each to their own.
You could spray it with car paint from rattle cans using the recommended primer, put on in thin coats it should give a good durable finish.
Ask at your local motor factors or even...
Get your glasses on or a magnifying glass, there should be a number on one of the ends. A quick search on the internet using the number should find it.
