I like Ian and Huanzhou's idea off the rod in a strong box to prevent crushing. On the rod I have made some bubble wrap covers that fit inside the reel pouch and the reel fits inside them to provide additional protection BUT you made need a larger size wrap over pouch to accommodate the bubble...
Part of the trouble is we are talking about two different activities: walking (with gear) when you are generating heat and being still when you are generating cold. Of course there is also a hybrid situation of roving. Often these days I will walk with relatively light clothing to keep cool to...
I use these Rich - NGT butt/tip protectors.
I also usually use these NGT protectors but for added security for the rod tip I slide up inside them a used small (Actimel) yoghurt pot then slide the tip joint and top of the butt joint inside that and trap with the velcro flap.
Two Simple Questions:
How do I stop hooking trout (I have tried various baits including bread!)
How do I stop Grayling falling off (I have tried various hooks, rigs and rods)
I used to know a very good angler who said the first few days of flood on a local river were not good because the extra water washed a load of extra sediment / chemicals (sewage?) into the river which put the barbel off. After a couple of days the barbel would feed heavily and that was the time...
Some years ago a guy suggested "guesting" the lake at night especially as there was no gamekeeper. There was a problem however. It was not the razor wire on top of the wall but the armed police and soldiers with sub machine guns in the grounds that shot first and asked questions afterward!
I found pop up foam (cut into the small shape of a maggot) could sink after a while as it absorbed water, which meant that the maggots I thought were popped up were actually sat on the bottom! Squeeze any absorbed water out and everything pops up. Try your hooklink in the edge when you reel in -...
Although barbel have relatively little slime some can remain in the landing net plus we do often catch slimy bream and the Spring anglers among us catch slimy tench so how do you clean your nets and unhooking mats from smell and slime? I use hot water plus laundry powder and a squirt of some...
What I find difficult is that some of my trotting centrepins (eg Okuma Sheffield, Match Aerial) have the line off the top so you wind backwards whereas some of my centrepins (eg caged Purists, Rapidex) have line off the bottom so you wind forwards and I keep on doing it the round way wrong as I...
You might have improved your catch rate by putting trebles on the float and twitching it! Many years ago AT had a report about a pike angler who put trebles on his float when a pike attacked the float but ignored the livebait 3 feet below. He eventually caught the pike - on the float!
I banked the heaviest catch ever . A big female weighing over 200 pounds. She fell off a kayak and I reached her with a landing net pole, then pulled her to safety. She said "You have saved my life!" If she had been younger and slimmer I would have insisted on the Kiss of Life. But as it was I...
One of the problems is the demographics of the members of clubs - not enough young people are joining so the age profile is increasing including OAPs on cheaper rates which means revenues decrease at a time when rents of fishing / maintenance etc. are increasing. One local club proposed a 33%...
On FleaBay at the moment. A caged drum tends to prevent nuisance wind wrapping the line around the foot of the reel on the rod, about on budget and the Purist is very free running but adjustable
