    Photos of river scenes

A sorry state of affairs indeed Mike. I have not cast a line in a river since the very start of the season, and cannot see me doing so for the forseeable future . We can only hope things improve. No rain here in West Yorks as yet, at least up near the moortops where I live. David

Hi Robert, what is the spool size please ? I have a friend who may be interested . He wants to know the dia of the outside of the spool, not bothered about the arbor size . David

    Photos of river scenes

River Ure , Boroughbridge . taken from the town bridge, on the other of the bridge the slightly deeper water had quite a large shoal of Chub milling around, and a couple of Barbel just off the main current . It needs a good flush through, as do most of our rivers . David.

    Nomads? Or just repeat captures

My own observations of larger fish caught seem to be that they “hang around” in pairs, I have noticed several times that when catching the smaller (5-7 lbs) fish , after a couple or more have succumbed to baits and been caught the swim will go quiet for a short while, then occasionally a larger...

    Low Oxygen, and feeding.

Martin is a lovely chap, and a fountain of knowledge, I have listened to his advice and always it has paid dividends, so much so that when fishing for other species, my bait tub in the main contains bread, sweetcorn, and sometimes worms. No visits to tackleshops to buy off the shelf baits...

John Wilson rod is back, by angling direct.

Years ago I owned a John Wilson Masterline Avon Quiver , worst bit of kit I ever had, the tip section snapped when winding in a Bream, not a big bream either . The company supplied a new tip section, and the same thing happened again same place . I wrote to the comapny, they replaced the tip...

    Bank tramp or tackle tart?

Cheers for that Richard.. I may be ocd about my gear, but so far as brands, makers, models of reels, rods, etc etc,etc I am definately a tramp. I have nil interest in the make of a reel, especially a modern fixed spool, or carbon rod, seat, brolly , in fact any tackle item. So long as whatever...

    Bank tramp or tackle tart?

I am of the keep it clean faction. In fact, my carbon gear is always cleaned and tidily put away after use , reels swilled off and dried, lines checked, landing nets washed/dried as required. Bait boxes washed and dried, bait sorted and returned to bulk containers. End gear and bits boxes...

    Bite alarms

The constant beep bloody beep from bite alarms is a reason in itself not to buy one. The people who use them in this scenario must be oblivious to the irritation and annoyance they cause to other anglers. Or they just dont care. Or as said above it is a macho thing that they want everybody to...

    foam nuggets

I use a part slice of bread . You can put the end tackle on top of the slice , lightly nick the hook in the crust and let the current take the bait and end gear downstream until it is in the desired location, a short sharp jerk on the rod tip dislodges the hook and then just hold the gear on a...

    Hacking

I have a 2 ft Machette hat my eldest lad made for me a few years ago, fearsome beasty with an edge that would cut your arn off ,it clears undergrowth with a few swipes. I was going to buy one but he produced it after an hours work in his workshop. David

    Good luck all…

This will be the first year I have fished the 16th for quite a while . Gear is all prepped apart from the hemp which is stewing in a flask atm. I will be in the bank for 5.00am whilst it is still cool , hopefully there will not be many if anybody else there . Home for noon then packing the car...

THis must really have caused some eyebrow raising 🤣🤣

I have had that happen as well Richard, I had a pike of about 18 lbs do that, it snatched a roach I was winding in, I managed to land it with the help of a companion, as the hook had ended up in its scissors. I rested it and then returned it about 50 yards along the bank. Ten mins later the...

THis must really have caused some eyebrow raising 🤣🤣

The fish was probably making sure that all the rods, reels, handles spool loading , drop backs etc were all perfectly lined up. After all, what self respecting Carp would allow itself to be caught on a three rod set up that was not matched to the nth degree . David

    Sea fishing guides?

Any charter skipper worth his salt should be able to put you over a few fish and explain the best ways to get a few bites. They will in a lot of cases even provide the rods, reels end gear and bait . A lot depends upon what species you are targetting , for instance fishing for Plaice is a lot...

    Barbel Groundbaits

I just use plain brown crumb, with home cooked hemp and a micro hali pellets, If I am using corn I substitute the pellets with corn . I use the hemp water from its cooking to mix the crumb to the right consistency to pack the feeder . I did once buy some off the shelf feeder mix specifically...
