    Spam for record size barbel

Run a knife around the meat in the tin and puncture a hole in the bottom, the hole stops the suction effect 😉.

    Youngs River Specialist Centrepin....

Yep, agree on every point. I also like the BJ reels, but i'm not overstruck on the ratchet lever, and do find the actual lever too easy to engage. The slightest accidental contact knocks it on or off when I use mine. I would prefer the actual spring to be stiffer which would most likely reduce...

    Youngs River Specialist Centrepin....

Only just cocked this thread, my opinion of the youngs RS is a highly positive one. I very much like them, and the ratchet lever is fine for me. I bought one when they very first came out, infact I have no2. Since then I bought another which kind'a shows how much I like them. Not only are...

    Best waders

Most of the time I wear a pair of aigle rubber thigh waders, really good quality and very handy to use/wear, I just fold them over when walking between swims. Regarding chest waders, I used to have a set of neoprene chesties which I found horrible to wear, I got soaked with sweat if I wore them...

    Drennan super spade hooks....

Ah, ok, get what you mean now 🙂. You could steer away from everyone elses tactic and squash 15 or more magg's on a 14s 😉.

    Drennan Acolyte Specimen Rod

I often use a 14ft browning sphere for my chub and barbel fishing. I've also used the 15 6 and 13 6 spliced models for the same purpose. Imo, the spheres are fantastic rods. For me, the accy plus is a bit more powerful than them, so the specimen accy is without doubt more powerful. I can't...

    Drennan Acolyte Specimen Rod

Over the years I've fould hooked them in just about every fin they have, even reeled one in hooked in it's eye socket, which was actually fine and did no damage as the bend of the hook went round and just lodged in place against the hard skull, so the point hadn't penetrated it at all. I have...

    Drennan Acolyte Specimen Rod

Glad is was worth you checking out 🙂. I use 6lb straight through on both the plus and specimen rods I haven't yet come across a barbel that can snap 6lb sensor in a tug of war, unless the line is cut on a rock or other snag etc.

What is Best Relief Lotion/Cream from Insect Bites

Sudacrem is the best thing i've come across. Great for lots of scenarios including bites and stings 😉👍.

    Chasing chub....

It wasn't a big fish for many rivers, but for this small tributary it was a clonker. I didn't weigh it, but would guess about 5lb, possibly a little more or maybe less. If it had been worth weighing then I would of weighed it rather than just make a guesstimate.

    Chasing chub....

Only just clocked this!...well done Richard crackin' chub there bud 🙂👍. Today I had a couple of hours, spent mostly walking, fighting my way through undergrowth and squatting horseflies. I must have killed about 30 or more of the barstewards and miraculously managed to evade being injected and...

    Trotting for Barbel

I think everyone has their own personal slant on the set ups required and what suites them. My own is very simple....6lb daiwa sensor fished straight through to a drennan superspade size 14s for the biggest part, but sometimes a 12s or even a 10s if using a bait such as meat. I use bolo floats...

    Drennan super spade hooks....

On occasions i've been catching fish as normal, then all of a sudden the fish start to come off a moment after hooking them. If this happens two or three times ( I know I should change the hook right away but i'm lazy and hope it stops happening) I just change the hook and the problem is...

    Drennan super spade hooks....

When you say lost fish, do you mean lost because the hook has dropped out? If that's what you mean, I can't say your wrong, only that I landed all the fish I hooked yesterday. They are barbed Richard, so even if the coating is slippy the micro barb should "in theory" help prevent the hooks...

    Drennan super spade hooks....

Thanks Richard, you may not like them, but i'd be very surprised if you don't, I do think they would be just up your street! Ok, i've only had one use of them, but I only used one hook all day and it stayed sharp all day! I used a size 10 because I was trotting chunks of spam and needed that bit...

Shimano Stradic Specialist Rod, 12ft, 1.25lb tc

As Alan mentions the shimano techniums are good, but the slightly more expensive shimano antares rods were very nice and the next level up from the techniums.
