    Oiling a cork handle

I can clearly see the filler in your acolyte rod, but in your picture the other/daiwa handle next to it looks to have just as many cracks but with no filler added? The daiwa handle appears/looks as though someone has used a nail brush or something similar to clean it and removed the filler. I'm...

    Oiling a cork handle

To be honest, I was surprised at how little filler is in them, maybe they had some decent cork at the time. It looks much better than the cork on my daiwas!

    Oiling a cork handle

You got me thinkin', so I just had a look at the corks on the drennan acolytes that I have, hardly a hint of filler in any of them 😁.

Small/ medium river fishing - wait or rove

Well, you know your river Richard, so you know how best to fish it, at the end of the day I can only spout off my opinions etc on rivers that I have experience of. I do fish a river where barbel are unheard of and as you say it would be hard to leave if you know they are there.

Small/ medium river fishing - wait or rove

Problem with that Richard, is those fish may not feed for hours, and you may have to wait until some others come along that are actually on the hunt for some jack bit. Do you remember the conversation me and you had and I told you about all the barbel infront of me which wouldn't feed and how I...

Small/ medium river fishing - wait or rove

When fishing small rivers i've always found if there are any chub in the swim I will hook one on the first trott, or within half a dozen trotts through. Usually the barbel are a bit slower to take my bait, but again within half an hour of throwing in a few handfuls of maggs and corn I would...

    Oiling a cork handle

Yea, I leave it on them also, but I do remove it when it splits or gets peels back and allows water to enter beneath it. You are right, the cork on the hardy rods is very nice quality. As I said in an earlier post it would be interesting to see a float rod handle kitted out with the Japanese...

    Oiling a cork handle

I have a pack of wet one wipes in the car boot and I give the cork, or maybe even the plastic 😉👍 a quick wipe over and my rod handles never get any build up of muck. I don't use groundbaits either as I prefer to use magg's and corn/ particles as an attractant. I always have a piece of old...

    Acolyte users??

I use both of them in the 13 and 14 foot models. From my own experiences with them I find the weight differences in them (although quite small) are definately noticeable, especially if you use the plus's after using the speci rods. The plus's are just less powerful so you do get more of a...

    Acolyte users??

I've searched for a float rod with the action that the drennan acolyte specimen float rods have for many years and was very happy when drennan finally produced them. I have numerous float rods which I very much like, but because of the weight, action and power of the speci acolytes I think they...

    Acolyte users??

Almost an "occupational" hazzard that you'll break the tips......after using them since a few months of them being realeased and have never broke a tip section, so that statment is nonsense, kinda like scaremongering even. I don't target gudgeon and small roach, dace etc with mine, althought I...

    Treating yourself.

For what its worth, I wou,d suggest you take a long hard look at the okuma aventa pro and sheffield centrepin reels. The okuma raw and bowlers are also excellent but might be difficuly to source. Regarding the free spirit power float rods.....I would forget them and look at the drennan acolyte...

    Winter is coming

Temu does some excellent thermal tops and trousers for winter. I've just got several sets myself. I wouldn't ever consider wearing a bib n brace, for me they are horrible bulky and restricting. I would always opt to use a layering system to keep warm rather than a suit made from the equivalent...

    Fish intelligence

I think fish act more upon instinct than inteligence. Recently someone mentioned the "do fish feel pain" debate...of course they do, otherwise they wouldn't react to the prick of a hook on a bolt rig set up. The other "can fish see colours" debate, again, of course they can otherwise some...

    OMC magic twig

After seeing the videos of the twig contraption in action it appeared to be completely superfluous. As far as I could make out it did nothing at all other than be a potential hazzard....a thumbs down from me 👎.

    Lidl garlic sausage

My take on that Neil "the barbel hooked with the meat left sliding up the line" might have been sucking on the meat and sucked the hook out....maybe? I can't think of any other explanation for that scenario. I'm just going off some types of fish in an aquarium when they can't get the food in...
