Saw my mate catch, kill (iki-jime) and gut a pink snapper in Australia. It then bit him, jaws clamped shut on his thumb. Revenge of the zombie snapper or just a muscle reflex action. Matey didn't half howl though.

Think my mate had one when we were teenagers. Remember him striking a bite and the metal tube snapped just above ferrule. Undeterred, he stuck the broken section into the female ferrule and fished on. Bit of 'slap' in the fit but he just carried on using it until he got another rod... two years...

Sounds like a piece of straight peacock quill, cut to length as needed and suitably painted might fit the bill for that range of shotting.
