Daiwa 20 GS BR LT 5000C

I have recently seen that reel on offer 5000-c size it does seem to fit what I am looking for a nice deep spool . I have noted the discussion dates, can any one give me an update after some years as to how they feel about them now?.
a good question to revive an old thread. How are they now?…. I don’t think they are particularly good reels from a reliability point of view.
It’s a shame because they feel incredibly smooth when new and they certainly look the part. Very smart looking little baitrunner but I’ve heard now of a few failures around the shaft area where it can slip and rotate even with the clutch locked up.
This was Daiwas answer to the 4000D and yet the little shimano beats it to death in terms of reliability

Daiwa don’t seem to be too interested in this compact baitrunner end of the market, perhaps they think it’s well covered with the QD models from TDR or tournament 20.
Yet 2 reels that barbel anglers rarely give a first though too. Not my cuppa tea either.

As far as baby baitrunners go for something reliable and functional it’s gotta be a shimano now. Daiwa need to either scale down the castizum or add a decent baitrunner and slow gear ratio to the TDR because the GS range was built on the cheap and they do fail if used hard.

Had no issues with mine other than one time I had the runner on and got into a fish, lifted the rod up and flicked the runner off and it didn’t deactivate. I tried reeling and the line kept peeling off. In the end I flicked the bait runner back on then off again and it disengaged. Only happened once though. Been nice to use other than that

Ah well, now there's a quandary for me as you say an attractive looking reel selling at one time for around £129.99 but now on offer. As for the Shimano range I will check it out looking for something around the 5000 to 6000 range I can also possibly use for dead bait pike fishing.
Thanks for the responses.

Dodged a bullet on these at time of investigating methinks - far too small/fragile and not enough cranking meat for me; hence going down the Daiwa 25mm spool concept route . . . Emblem BR25As on all barbel rods (other than float rods obvs) and Whisker 25QDs on my small water Carp rods . . .

. . .Barbel fishing is almost as bad as carping for 'new gear' syndrome . . .!

Have been using my trusty 20yr old plus ye olde Shimano Aero GT 5500's for the river (normally part of my small water / floater fishing / carp stalking set up) and they are fine in principle in terms of weight balance and baitrunner system - however they are 'sticky' in terms of rear drag (which I've never liked) and also have a narrow small spool which means a lot of twist and more frequent line changes etc . . .

Have never used a baitrunner on my main carp rods (unnecessary) but understand the need for rivers etc so have been looking at these Daiwas which are relatively new as they seem to tick all boxes - main front drag / rear baitrunner drag - anyone got any experience in using them for barbel . . .?

Cheers Chris
I purchased a new pair for my tench rods about 2-3 years ago. One of them failed within months of buying. The tackle dealer sorted the problem out without issue. My personal view is that the build quality is lacking. I sold them on and replaced with the old second hand Shimano aeros. I appreciate that others will have a different opinion on the build quality. They look nice though 😀.
