Which off the shelf float rod? Opinions please :)

I liked the 13 a lot but it’s just not a length in that particular power rating that I use hardly ever.
I sold my 14ft spectron too.

I do turn rods over quite frequently and only keep the really special ones.
The Preston is really becoming a firm favorite. That was really awesome to play barbel on last Sunday. That’s got some mega back bone in it.

Yea, after having a play with a friends preston supera power rod I was very impressed. To be honest I felt it put the new avenger to shame!
The only thing I wasn't sure about were the guides, the blank and the action were superb.

As you know I had very similar reservations on them also. I’m quite at ease with them now though. I think any weaknesses or points of failure in them would have come to light by now. It’s gonna be a hell of a tool for the slider float guys with such large bores on the guides.
I half expected them to put afew yards on my Wallis cast being lower friction from the bigger bores but there is no noticeable difference at all.

I've got the Mark Tunley MK1 13 1/2 ft specialist float to there's one available now on sale now. It's a lovely rod with top quality carbon and kit and handles the whole range of float fishing right down to small pond crucians/silvers up to barbel as had no problem with a near double recently on Ouse.

Yea, it's just previous experiences with minima style guides that made me wary.
The rod though, absolute corker imo!
I know my friend had several very decent barbel with his 14ft supera power last week and rattled them out with it.

I had a carbotec no2 which was a full system 3 different butt sections 13/15/17.

I was quite excited about owning it and using it before I’d actually tried one
I picked it up for a right bargain at 450 quid.

Been 100% honest, I Absolutely hated it!

I just couldn’t get on with it. The concept is brilliant for certain applications and I imagine they would be really exciting rods stood in the middle of the river letting a massive barbel just tire itself out against that action.
But from a bank with a chub. You just can’t push them out the rod just keeps giving them the leash to plough straight into your bank.
in these situations it’s good for a blank to practically lock right up and say enough is enough.

It cost me afew good fish so I sold it and doubled my money on it.
Perhaps the no3 would have been more to my liking. I sold one not long ago for a friend but I never used it. It definitely felt a bit more substantial.

I have used the No 2 and No3 13/15ft float rods. They are a joy to use at 13ft but you do notice the extra weight difference at 15ft.
My no 2 had 3 butt sections and 2 middle sections so it could fish as a dedicated rod at 13/15/17ft. Without the need of the 2ft dolly.
It would have cost an absolute fortune to buy new.

It wasn’t bad to hold to be fair even with the long sections I managed it comfortably
It was just a bizarre action that i wasn’t used to.
It was a nightmare with big crafty chub that dart straight for your feet because the anti lock properties in the blank prevented you from being able to push the fish back out. I dread to think what they would do to a no1.

Probably tie the tip section in the reeds with a double bow

Noticed on ebay a new Preston x Supera power 15ft rod at £214.
Seems a good price ??
The 15ft is actually not a power float just a stepped up 3-6lb line rod. The only length they offered in the supera x as a proper power model was 14ft which rates to 8lb line.
214 isn’t a bad price I suppose but i bought mine new for £268

Some retailers have simply got it wrong. The 15' Supera X Float is not a "power" rod. Only the 14' Supera X Power Float rod is labelled as such.
There's also a 13' Waggler, 12' Carp Waggler and an 11' Pellet Waggler. I doubt that everything on Preston's website is entirely accurate. If you click the down arrows next to RRP, it gives some inconsistent specs. They've put 266g as a spec weight for the 13' Waggler rod. That's 67g more than the 15'er. Hopefully, it's just a typo and should have been 166g.

Hi Rich. Others on there say 15ft power x float at £285 and 315?
£214 new is a good price and it’s a nice rod.
I ignored it myself as I have rather a lot of 15ft rods rated around the 5-6lb line bracket already, Stepped up match rods I suppose you could say.

The 14ft was the one I was really interested in seeing. Been a length I don’t often buy and the claims on its power being of interest to me, I had wading on the Trent for big fish in mind with its purchase.

I like it a lot. It’s another option for people on the power float front. It’s got a really nice action, progressive but will happily go all the way over with enough force on.

I’ve had Trent and nene barbel on it to low doubles.
