I recently heard a chap saying he had caught Barbel on tiger nuts.....that also got me thinking about other carp baits (ie) boilies.......I have used them but always used your classics like red or brown .......has anyone had success on bright yellow or white for instance?
And whilst iv always chosen meaty or fishy has anyone used sweet baits with success? Curious to know really

IMO anything a carp will eat so will Barbel…as long as it’s presented well and the fish are feeding. Some days they have a preference for a certain type of bait, when they are feeding well on casters/hemp they’ll likely ignore a lump of meat or it’ll scare them off! I’ve done well in the past on sweet flavoured paste/boilies (butterscotch/caramel/honey tones)… if I’m making bait myself I never dye it. Personally I think asking for opinions on bait will end up leading you down the rabbit hole with more confusion, just find a good quality bait they like, preferably one that others are not using (if going down the boilie approach) and apply it sensibly

Funny you ask because I heard recently that a very big barbel was caught on a pineapple boilie from the Thames, also had a 30+ carp (which I presume was the target species) Sure I have read stuff before in the past (maybe on here) about barbel liking pineapple.

Lee. I have personally never used either Tiger Nuts or other particles apart from Hemp, Tares and Sweetcorn. Those three alone have always done for me but I can confidently tell you that Tiger Nuts, Peanuts and Maples will all work. I know people that have used them successfully. I think all these baits should be used carefully and only human grade Nuts should ever be used.
I have heard of people using Cell boilies for Barbel and sweet flavours like caramel ( I use it myself) definitely work in base mixes such as milk protein based and savoury mixes other than fishmeal.
I think there's room for experimentation with fruit flavours and bases but it is certainly not necessary unless it really interests you.

Hi men

Many years ago we caught a fair few on T7 choc/orange bait in boilie with a wrap . It was my fav bait from them before they stopped 🫤.

For the last two seasons I have used well glugged boilies as hook baits.

The first being Pacific Tuna, the second being boilies soaked in JB Baits Creme Caramel flavor.
I have also used a "snowman set up" with a small white popup on the top.

All have caught well with a good spread of numbers and weights .
I have had repeat captures on all the over flavored baits.
For sure the sweet flavors work, the caramel flavor has often saved me from a blank!

Next experiment , single over flavored bright slightly popped up boilies! :)

I know a lad local to me who has caught barbel on the newer version of the cream cajouser from nutrabaits. I don't think I have the minerals to try a sweet/creamy bait even though I know they work. Much rather be safe and stick to my fishmeal/savoury boilies
