Thoughts on Block end feeders.

I have to say that it is a long time since I used feeders on the usual waters I fish for Barbel.
A recent trip to the Severn had me clipping on a 'Black Cap' more out of curiosity than anything else. This is of course a popular tactic on the middle Severn and the chap who kindly took me to one of his stretches uses it regularly so, when in Rome...
Sure enough I had a good evening's fishing. My question is though, when filling the feeder with small items like hemp and 3mm pellets, though the feeder appears to be emptying, how much of the bait is emptying either on impact or as you retrieve? Does it matter if the technique works?
Anyone care to comment? I am interested to hear people's views.

Andrew, I use them all the time when feeder fishing, I think the contents empty on hitting the surface and dropping through the water and finally when on the bottom, of course this will vary depending on depth and flow. Bottom line is they work !
Yes. That was my feeling in it. Thanks Cliff

Love Blackcaps, If you desire a more accurate deposit on the river bed, just tape up the body, and leave the ends free.
Exactly what I do…but of camo tape around middle section. If it is a swim with a pretty rapid flow I also put a small amount of sticky groundbait at ends with pellets/casters/hemp or whatever in middle…I’m pretty confident this allows a little bit of time for feeder to hit deck without losing the feed

It is a shame Blackcaps don't come heavier than 50gram without using an additional weight (dead cow type). I bought some Korum Combi Feeders in 60 and 90 grams (there is also a 120 gram) and these have the added bonus of being able to remove the end caps and use them as open feeders.

John. When I was in Bewdley Tackle the other day I bought some dead cow weights that are quite interesting. You nay have seen them? Anyway, you remove the strip of lead on the feeder and fix one in its place so no additional leads. They are angled and the thinking behind it is that they lift off the bottom easier when you retrieve them. They were waiting for a new delivery and only had the 2 - 3 oz ones but my understanding is they go much heavier than this. I agree that it's odd they don't sell them with heavier weight options. I do like the neat compact size of them though but I agree if you want to put out more bait then a larger open end feeder is a better option.

Problem with the Korum ones is that the end caps come out when fishing and you end up with an open end feeder. Only solution is to glue one cap in?

Short bit of pole elastic tied between one end and feeder works fine. They don’t come out that often if feathering the cast down and not casting to a clip….and it’s enough to with elastic to still quickly change between open/block and not lose the part
