Helping Barbel that are having difficulty recovering

P
I'm the same. I watch a lot of stuff on YouTube, and am generally quite surprised how long fish are kept out of water, while they talk a load of rubbish about how they just went about it's capture. (I'm thinking I was there just watching it you idiot🤦‍♂️)
A lot of it is unnecessary. And I cringe sometimes.
I'd much prefer to have some audio on its capture, whilst the camera is showing the fish in the net, facing upstream starting it's recovery process.👍

Your not wrong Julian!
Its not just youtube clowns though, many of the celeb's do exactly the same thing, then they'll say...."lets put him back straight away"....seriously annoying and many times i've been sat it the chair shouting "just put the effing fish back ffs" !
I can't weigh up why they have to do a jackanory story whilst holding the gasping fish up to the camera at the same time, let the fish go then do the chit chat.

I never weigh or even photograph any fish I catch unless it maybe a double, which is rare for me on the middle Severn, they all look the same for christ sake,if I get a decent one on the Thames then maybe 🤔

Good advice which I’ll definitely keep in mind as I’m relatively new to targeting barbel specifically. I flat out won’t fish for them in this heat, I prefer evening tench sessions but even then I’m not daft if it’s too hot. I’m not a fan of the heat myself anyway, I’m an autumn/winter person. The two barbel I’ve had so far this season were on the coolest days and were rested for ages in the flow before release.

It’s a shame that so many don’t really care for their quarry, the two flyer pegs on part of the river I fish (although I don’t fish that section) have been closed because anglers wernt resting fish.

I think I'd be inclined to do the same nowadays. It has to be a biggie to be photographed. And even then it won't be released until it's properly fighting fit.

But I won't be out till end of August going into September when the evenings start to chill down a bit, I can't understand the reason to be out in this recent heat, definitely not good for the fish that's for sure! Or ourselves for that matter 👍
