Hook length material

Hi all,

With the season fast approaching, and my first full season as a Barbel angler coming (only started July last year); I'm looking for some advice on hook length material. I've been using Drennan flouro so far but find it extremely stiff. After read an article on a guide to the Trent, they recommended braid only as the stiffness of flouro can put barbel off.

So I'm looking to get some recommendations of a braided, and any softer Flouro hook length materials.

Looking forward to getting out on the river again.

Hi Steve, seaguar soft plus , is a great all round flouro, good abrasion resistance, strong for stated diameter and very supple, as with all flouro remember to run it through a cloth every session.
Regarding braid hook links, I only use coated braid. And most offer very good options. I mainly use soft coated for near side work, but semi stiff iff casting more than 30yds.

Steve, Ive been using Drennan Supplex fluro, works well for me. you could try a combo rig (last 3 inches braid) and see if that works better for you.

I used to tie up flexi-rigs with the last 3" being soft braid but for the last several seasons I have used 0.24 Preston Reflo Powerline only. Works fine on the Severn, Wye and Trent.

I have been using a Combi rig for a few years now after using it for carp fishing for more years than I can remember. Ideal just changing the short braid hook link when a hook change is needed.

Use combi rigs and get the best of both. I use 12lb Gardner Mirage flouro and 15lb Kryston Supa Nova braid I tie the rig using the Alberto knot.

Steve. You could do what I do which is to tie in a short length of braid ( 4 - 6") commonly referred to as a 'combi link'. Use a well tied 4 turn water knot for the link or if you prefer a double grinner. I have never had the knot fail. The short bit of braid, I like to think, gives a subtle presentation and allows your bait to settle down amongst the stones on the bed. I usually leave a tag on the knot and pinch on a small shot like a no. 4 to help settle it down.

Combi Fluoro and braid ... 14 hook and fake casters .
