What's this spike for please?

Going through my boxes of odds and ends I found this.
I guess the hole on the side towards the top is for a bar to screw the spike into the ground.
There is a hole at the very end but it's only 10mm in diameter which I think is smaller than an umbrella pole
so any thoughts please

The point looks the same as my gardener umbrella spike, look forward to finding out the answer 👍

Mike.

The spike was made by Gardner probably over 20 years ago. I can't recall the name but I had a couple.

The idea behind it was to be able to get a bankstick into hard ground. You screwed it into the ground using a tommy bar then put your bank stick into the top & tightened the screw to stop the bank stick moving.

It looks like you adapted it to use it as you would a dog spike.

It looks to me like my Nash prolly pole , they used to sell them separately because of breakages to hollow Brolly poles, although some Nash brollys came with them in .
I think someone has adapted it to suit their needs . Ie , dog spike or digging stick like Matthew said.

As others have said it looks like a bank stick/hole excavator with an auger point for rock hard ground, with the hole at the top for a T-bar to crank it round and get more force. JAG excavator bank sticks are a similar setup for carp (I have them)

Thanks all
Matthew your suggestion may be the closest only problem the hole that is at the top end, not the side hole, is only 10mm I have lots of old slim banksicks but none as thin as 10mm.
Anyway will try and take it with me if I am fishing some slippery slopes on the Stour or when anfd if I next go to the Wye where it may help clambering up and down.

Mike. I've managed to find my ones & whilst they look identical, the hole in the top is 13mm meaning any standard bank stick will fit it.

Are you sure yours is only 10mm? Mine also has 2 thumb screws & I can see in your picture it looks like you have lost one of yours.

Hi Matthew
Yes 10mm and yes one thumbscrew missing
Below are pics of hole measurement and the slimmest old bankstick I have
Click on to enlarge
As I stated previously will possibly use it to clamber up and down slippery banks
Thanks again

Mike, that bank stick looks quite fat and tubular, i had some which were thinner and made of solid metal. Maybe your spike was meant for them. 🤷‍♂️

I’d say it’s for a screw in palm saver like the jag ones screw in and to save hurting your hand. maybe any way 🤷‍♂️
