It’s horrendous destruction of a natural habitat for so many species; it will all grow back but in the meantime leaves the resident wildlife very vulnerable. Was there any reasoning for it?
 
Flood defence I would suggest.
 
And what about upstream?
 
Let's face it, Alan, irrespective of it's merit, we all know that's what they'll say?
I have to say I wasn't trying to justify, I think looking at the images we may be equally despondent.
 
I’m not familiar with the river, but if this involves mass tree felling/removal then contact the Forestry Commission and ask them to check if a felling license was granted bythem?

Same thing happened on my local River Dane and they were all over it, eventually issuing the farmer with a legally enforceable tree restocking order!
