Prolonged heat

Laughter aside, the only thing I'll say on this "aerator" thingie is this: The last time I went barbel fishing (11 days ago) I had an 8lb'er that powered off hard downstream. When I finally got her in front of me she took a liking to the half-submerged bush immediately upstream and to the right of me. With rod low and hard to left (it was a Free Spirit, so the tip section was parallel to the butt Rich 😂), and I had to drag her backwards into the waiting net. Almost immediately she rolled over and went belly up.
IF I'd had a gizmo (say USB powered and pen-shaped) that produced a stream of oxygen-rich water from its tip, I would have used it then. It would have aided that fish's recovery, and if there was (a proven) one on the market now, I would buy one.
I'm sure some anglers were laughing at and making snide remarks about unhooking mats not too long ago.

Blimey, this thread started to go a bit "off piste" didn't it? The danger of intense heat, DO levels and stress on fish stocks was discussed on an Angling Trust Zoom forum last Wednesday. I am told it was very good and explored the connection between fish behaviour and welfare and adverse environmental conditions. Here in Norfolk, many day ticket lakes are now closed as the owners do not want additional pressures put on their expensive fish stocks by the combination of low oxygen levels, high heat and fish being caught.
Oxygenating plants only produce oxygen during the day and at night the process reverses. With these warm evenings and the accepted facts relating to the disappearance of oxygenating plants in rivers, it is common sense to assume DO in lakes and rivers has been compromised.
A readable version of the forum discussion should be available soon on the AT website.

My two penneth - its too hot to fish for any species - let alone barbel. Also seems to me any idea that can help our quarry recover more effectively even by 1% is a good idea - carp fishing is waay ahead in terms of fishcare / attitudes to fishcare and they are hardier creatures that can handle a small amount of time on the bank - barbel fishing needs to catch up IMO; irrespective of water temps

Not sure this would work but the smarter brains out there could maybe adapt it?

If we are fishing for them in the right conditions and they are handled correctly, then there will be sufficient oxygen in the water for the barbel to recover (in it's own time).

In the absence of any proven trials which show oxygenating devices to work I would caution against using them. Two reasons spring to mind - too much oxygen can be harmful to fish e.g. gas bubble disease, and secondly if fish are being rested-up in the margins, I would be nervous of inadvertently stirring up any marginal sediments which could be the last thing a recovering barbel needs flushing through its gills.

I've never caught a barbel which, when given the time it needs to recover, hasn't swum away strongly - they will sort themselves so long as they are given time.

Hi men ,

Something iv been doing , especially in France in warmer water conditions is something iv seen on a korda carp masterclass its an oxygen bath . A bucket of water is poured from a height next to a fish resting in a net , and I'm positive it puts more oxygen in , and helps recovery . If it carries over to barbel resting I'm.not sure , but can't see why not .

Just to mention that if you have a barbel that goes belly up in the net, then you need to hold it underwater with head highest.

Then run a couple of fingers along the gut up from outside the vent to the Gill area. Do a couple of times until the fish expels bubbles

This will expel air that has been gulped by the fish during playing and netting .

Fish should then slowly right itself.

A good rest in the net until it kicks a few times.

Carp fishing is way ahead in fish care
……. And innovation and tackle and rigs and bait and anything else you can think of ..I’ve said it before I don’t know why lots of barbel anglers refuse to move on from the 1970,s it’s little wonder lots of tackle companies don’t really cater for dedicated barbel tackle
If a portable device was available to help the recovery of barbel why wouldn’t you want it in your rucksack…. Every single one of us has been worried at one time or another with a barbel that is taking far too long to recover in the net

Thing is Terry as soon as you put anything on here thats an advancement on rigs , bait, techniques they all come out from behind the woodwork trotting out the old cliches , " not needed" " its not carp fishing " " barbel are stupid " and that might be the case on some rivers but not all , some southern rivers big girls are cagey as theve bern caught a few times and sometimes we need to pinch an idea from the carp world to give us an edge , trying to convince some on here that perhaps fishing in this short extreme weather conditions isnt a good idea is bad enough let alone try a wafter rig or pop up bait or combi rig , save your breath mate , ive said it before the forum needs a bait and rig section where those who'd like to discuss advancements can do so without being denounced as a heretic !

43 degrees on the Unimog dash today, hottest we've ever seen. We've been cutting trees all day. Phew!!

Yeah, I reckon you should call it "Smug Super Specialists" and only ultra-cultists under the age of 60 need apply.🤣😂🤣
There's anglers on here that have been using combi rigs and balanced baits (ok, to carper "wafters"🤣) for 20 years or more, and the first thing I ask myself when I'm changing my rig is "Do I need each and every bit of this rig?" I don't blindly follow someone just because they have a million subscribers on You Tube. KISS!!
All thinking angler do ask "Do I need this xxx?", and if they look at a 'new rig' then the thinking angler will question whether it'll work as well for barbel as well as it does, or doesn't, for carp (or just another weird 'n wonderful 'bit' that enriches suppliers a bit more). Thinking angler don't blindly follow 'the celebs'. 'Off the shelf' rigs can be fantastic, in the right hands and in the right situation, but in other situations they can be deadly. One drawback can be they can make anglers lazy (e.g. why are you using that rig?...cus Terry Hearn does) Learn your knots, learn your rigs. Think!
Personally I think your slagging off of BFW members is very much misplaced, and out of order. From your expressed opinions you'd think this site was full of knuckle-draggers. IMO anglers mostly come on hear to learn, rather than boast about what a fantastic angler, and how clever, they are.

Easiest way to help is to ban fishing altogether,,, i would be carefull how far you take this thread,,,,

Don’t recall mentioning BFW terry I do engage with other barbel anglers apart from BFW …I’ve learnt loads on here from some very good anglers
But the context of your post is exactly what I’m talking about … if people want to talk about rigs and inovation they are labelled smug elitist terry hearn wannabes …… people in glass houses etc
