Most of the lower Thames reaches get fished regularly and the big fish come out multiple times in a season on the popular stretches. I'd be surprised if one of them had grown to national record proportions without popping up on the grapevine.
That said there is likely a fish or two which might...
Personally I wait for a pull which is in progress. I feel there's no reason striking at plucks as the fish likely doesn't have the bait in the mouth.
I have a friend who strikes at the first sign a fish is at the bait. The logic doesn't seem right to me but then again he banks way more fish...
One thing is weight. If you are touch ledgering then a short rod weighs less. After 5 hours or so of touch ledgering you'll notice the difference!

Get on the Thames, this is generally the best time of year. Free fishing from Staines downstream. Anywhere can produce barbel. Try the roving approach, 20 mins or so per swim and keep moving. Drop a few pellets in as you go and fish them on the way back. Happy hunting!

Bit pricey and the US handle

Cut the meat into slices, not cubes. Bait up with several slices. More flavour is released this way and also if you loose one or two slices you still have something on the hook.

Took a good while looking around before I chose a shelter. I had the same issue, some swims having flat banks and plenty of space and other having sloping banks and little space.
I eventually went of one of these.

Had a look in this week's Angling Times. Mr. Ayling is pictured with a river Thame monster. Can't recall the exact weight but 16.08 or 10 I recall. Beats the current 16lb 2oz record.
A pretty outrageous capture considering Luke recent caught PB 16.02 fish on the Thames recently :eek...
Several slices of meat on a size 1 with the hook point buried. Only when fishing low water will I use a hair and normally then I use pellet or boilie.
Several slices because if one is pulled off or falls off there are the others. With a cube of meat there is always the chance of sitting there...

Took a good while looking before I decided on one of these. Been more than happy with my purchase.
