WANTED - 3 OR 4 PIECE QUALITY BARBEL ROD -

Tim Speller

Active Member
Hope to go to Wye just before season ends - Mid March, ANY/ALL advice welcome as to where is appreciated. Been twice now and not caught....
and I Used my Carp Rod...it just didn't feel right to me to use it, ( Maybe the fish know!) ....call me old fashioned, but 1 or 2 new rods needed...BUT 2/3 piece preferred. Thank you

To be more serious, what’s your budget? To fish wye, a 12ft 2-2.25tb rod should be enough, but most of them are 2pcs, if you want an 3,4 pieces rod, maybe a match style heavy feeder?

Hi Tim.
Which is it 2/3/4 piece?
2 is dead easy…that pretty much is the norm

3 your options reduce dramatically but there’s 1 or 2 about. Heavy feeder rod like said above probably best.

4 is probably easier than 3 for barbel/specialist rods. It falls under compact rods and there’s afew options out the from jw young, fox, Harrison, master line etc. you can even get them in a 5 piece with different quiver strengths.

For 4 pieces rod, the only one I know is Harrison 4 pc Avon. All the rest are 5 pcs and in 1.75tc, which maybe a bit light if you want to cast heavy feeders. To my knowledge, only Fox did a 5pcs specimen rod before, in 2.25tc.

A 1.75 rod will be fine for the Wye in nsl conditions.
It’s all I used on the swale and that’s very similar in terms of speed and depths.
4 or 5 piece I don’t think matters really some are 11 and 12 feet yet they all fall into this compact/travel rod category and are probably easier to obtain than 3 piece barbel rods.
Harrison did 1 iirc. Can’t remember the name now I think @Joe Winstanley has it and rates it very highly

Triptych, 12ft 3pcs, 1.5tc I think?

I did have the Tryptych, 12' 1.5lb 3-pc. Nice rods, basically a 12' 3-piece version of the 11ft 2-piece avon. Slightly overstated TC.

I do prefer the 11ft 4-piece avon though.

I have a 2 piece 11ft 2lb TC Torrix for sale, here just saying 👌🏻

Hi.... THANKS....I did buy a Masterline 4 piece barbel from A-direct a few weeks ago...it just look a bit...well, shiney, and pokey really, and was only £48.00 so I'm not really that keen on using it on the Wye.....The River and Fish seems to deserve better respect that cheapy....maybe it's just me so I've quadrupled my budget...

Does masterline still operating? And I think their travel rod is 5pcs based on the john Wilson travel barbel rod, which is actually a really nice rod. The new John Wilson travel rod from angling direct seems good as well.

I may have a couple of Harrison Tryptych in the shed somewhere.
Think 1 is single leg and the other is double leg.
Any one got any idea what they would be worth if I sold them?
