rainbow trout - Hampshire Avon

Tim Lennon

Senior Member
It would seem there's been yet another "accidental" release of rainbow trout from one of the trout farms along the Avon judging by the numbers that are being caught. My gut feeling is that they should be killed if captured, rather than returning them to the river, particularly at a time when natural species fry will be abundant.

Any thoughts?

CAC rules state that on capture rainbow trout should be killed.

Catching a few on the Kennet too.

get yer frying pans out!

David, you wouldn't want to eat the trout that are normally accidentally released cos it's usually old brood fish that would otherwise need to be disposed of, I'm told.

Damian, CAC rules are being broken then, though I must admit I've not noticed that ruling.

I know many people don't like killing fish, and it wouldn't be easy to do it humanely, bearing in mind that most barbel anglers don't carry a priest!

They were bred to be killed whether they are for supply for the table or stocking and as unnatural inhabitants should be removed as they will be competeing with indiginous species.

Maybe priests and bass bags should be carried? I don't actually think farmed trout are particularly tasty but very nice if you smoke them.

Take them to Liberty's raptor centre, they'd be very grateful.

Seems that most carry a machete that should do the job.

Having worked on trout farms I would find it highly unlickely they were released on purpose. Trout on a farm would also keep on growing, they don't stunt like cyprinids. My advice would be to eat them or give them away.

Freeze them for Winter Piking!

You don't need a priest, hold them by the body in one hand and place the thumb of your other hand in the back of the head and the crook of your index finger on the top jaw then bend the head back using your thumb as a fulcrum. Death is instant as the spine breaks.

And enjoy fresh?

Of course, cooked on the bank is best but if you can't then gut them straight away and keep them cool in a wet cloth bag (cooling by evaporation) definitely not a plastic carrier.

I thought you were so desperate to kill thing Adrian, you might have eaten it raw!

Lord I hope not Damian....and I certainly hope he is not wicked enough to be one of those evil types who stick metal spikes in fishes lips as a form of arcane torture....tell me it's not true Ade

Cheers, Dave.

I'm a meat eater Damian, I believe that if you want to eat meat then you should be willing and able to kill and prepare it.
In the past my family have kept, killed and eaten most common livestock up to and including goats.
I have also worked in a meat processing plant where my job was deboning cows heads.
I would not kill simply for the sake of killing but I see nothing wrong with taking a few trout for the table and my method of dispatching trout is no more or less humane than bashing them on the head with a purpose made stick.

I had no doubt at all about you being a meat eater Adrian, I was half expecting you to next advise by just biting the head off!
