Wychwood Lunker Boots

Back

Introduction

After experiencing conditions that were too cold for my Goretex walking boots, I thought it about time that I got myself a pair of thermal boots for those long cold hours stood beside my fishing rods. To be fair, I have a pair of the excellent Derri Pisces, but these are really thermal wellingtons and I wanted something that would give me more purchase on slippery river banks and most importantly to keep my tootsies warm.

Wychwood Lunker Boots - Size 8/9

Description

These are large boots for the size, necessitated by the incorporation of the 'Thinsulate' thermal liners and heavy in comparison to my summer walking boots. As a guide my Goretex walking boots weigh in at 1.4kg, the Derri Pisces at 2.0kg and the Lunkers at a little over 2.3kg. The rubber soles are black rubber with a chunky grip pattern. Most of the stitched and proofed uppers appear mostly to be constructed of a Scotch guarded canvas type material, which for maximum life the manufacturer advises needs to be retreated with a suitable waterproofing agent from time to time..

In Use

I must admit on walking around the house with them on I was conscious of the weight, but after I stopped telling myself they were heavy, I grew accustomed to them. Out in the real world of fishing, I quickly noticed that they were relatively comfortable to walk in, with the extra warmth and grip a bonus. After around half a dozen or so trips involving heavy rain and glutinous ooze, I can say that that they are waterproof, warm
and comfortable. Some people may find the high ankle length of these boots not to their taste. My advice would be try before you buy.

Conclusions

Good warm, waterproof boots, possibly more suited to staying put applications than roving, although not too bad to walk in. This review will be updated for a more long term report.

Price

Recommended retail price of £49.99, but found these boots on offer at time of purchase (December 2003) for between £35 and £40
