Tench 2024

@Bill Walford the complex no longer exists apparently rather is part of Newton Abbott club and a locals only club within a 20 mile radius. Hmm shame the canal it is
Jon,
I spoke with Adam Bojar the Tenchfishers SW Regional organiser today as promised. As @Nicholas Cole has said their is quite a bit of water at Rackerhayes that can be fished on day ticket but he also says that the 20 mile radius for membership was dropped a couple of years ago. If you want night fishing you will need to be a member to be on the water 24 hours. He also mentioned Steve Dawes Sanctuary water in North Devon as previously mentioned and made the comment that the Tench in the canals are very nomadic. Sounds to me that getting on Sanctuary is best option if achievable or Newton Abbott membership if you want 24 hour fishing and are prepared to travel.
Good Luck and keep us all posted on how you get on.
Regards
Bill

The latest Guru underwater video focusses on helicopter rigs. Whilst they are fishing for bream, one or two tench turn up as well. Well worth a watch.

I watched this last night, absolutely brilliant video. It's certainly changing my helicopter rig and just a couple of weeks, is the change between an hook up and a dropped bite.
Agree, it was great. The only thing I couldn't get my head around is why they were recommending moving the float stops right down to by the feeder. Granted, it resulted in better takes but if you are going to fish like that, why not just use a lead clip, bolt rig set up?

Just google ‘guru underwater 2’ or ‘guru underwater heli’. No 2 is the heli and hybrid feeders.

Very very interesting - but they could use some help from a top Stillwater specialist angler who fishes with feeders.

I fished Monday for six hours but alas not a sniff. When I arrived the swim I fancied was occupied by a carper. Our peace and quiet was soon shattered when a team of tree “surgeons” moved in at eight o’clock to start work right next to said swim. For once I was glad the swim was occupied 🤣
Returned today and able to get into this same swim which had been out of bounds for a couple of days while the tree chaps did their work. I arrived and was fishing by 5.45am. I had to wait ‘till 11.10am before I got my first action but what action! An absolute beauty of 8-06 which fought like a carp. I ended a long 12 hour day with four Tench the smallest just sneaking over the five pound barrier at
5-01, one 13lb Common carp and a new PB…..an Eel of 4-02.

Afternoon all
I had blagged 3 tench the other day (and night) all about 6lbs, I have to admit it was whilst carp fishing but sometimes there's not much difference between the two. If I was specifically after the tench I probably would have just shaved a bit off the tutti wafter and used a slightly lighter rod.
A nice surprise in the middle of winter anyway, I had them ripping up the bottom for the boilie crumb and liquidised corn.

Nice fish and nice looking bit of water, nothing like the commercials that seem to be everywhere!

My first 2024 tenching session last Wednesday. I arrived at dawn not expecting much, as it was a stiff cold wind with a water temp of 9 Deg C. Another guy there had blanked for tench with the solitary bream over his 2 days. It was to be a short initial visit. Not a touch all morning despite frequent casting. I had packed away and was just about to reel my rod to complete, when I had my first take. After a spirited fight I netted (scooped with the frame) a 6.02 lb specimen. So I thought I'd give it a bit longer and had a 6.04 lber within the hour. A pleasing start when not expecting to catch in the inclement conditions.

Nine hours of nothingness today. My mate and I fished different areas and neither of us had any activity. Lake very busy over Easter apparently which would mean mountains of bait going in ! Possibly affected our efforts? Back later in week for another bash.

A crazy day yesterday! Baits out by 6am as it started to absolutely pour down with rain, setting up in the wet is one of my pet hates so my brolly was first thing out of the holdall. I sat questioning my sanity and began to think I should have stayed in bed, this was reinforced when the rain stopped, sun came out and the bobbins began to bounce as roach set about my maggot baits. I got the Spomb rod out and gave each hookbait area a good baiting. After about an hour the roach stopped pestering, I’d either fed them off or frightened the daylights out of them but they moved. 9:15 saw an absolute corker of a take which resulted in a 2-13 Eel and although very obligingly lip hooked it made a right mess of my hooklink and put a twist in my newly filled line☹️
Nothing then until 12:25 when the madness started, a 5lb male made life all rosy again but started the most hectic session I think I’ve ever had, in 3.75hours I had eleven fish including 2 x 7’s biggest 7-13, 1 x 6 and 2 x 5’s. I finally ran out of feed maggots after 8 Tench and my last three were caught on empty feeders just fresh hookbaits!
